Hit the TM today cause in the air looked disgusting!! After about 1.5, I couldn't take the pain in my shin, so walked at a fast pace for the remainder of my "run".  Boo shin splints! I am trying to stay positive and I continue to do strengthening exercises so hopefully sooner than later it will be healed!

Weird! Hopefully it's nothing. If your insurance allows, maybe find a good running PT. It might be worth a good visit. When I had ITB issues I went to one who I know is a runner and he studied my gait, gave me some tips that solved a different problem I was having. I don't know how they would help shin splints, but maybe it isn't that? Dunno - but would be nice to have a professional opinion.

That might be a good idea, I will check into it. I had an xray 2 weeks ago, and they didn't see anything, and I dont want to pay big bucks for an mri (insurance doesn't cover ) thanks for the info.

Be careful, Peg. I'd hate to see you run yourself into a stress fracture. How old are your shoes? If they have a lot of mileage on them, they might not be cushioning you enough.

So I got my 13 year old son to run with me today! Fun! He is a soccer player, but hurt his achilles in August, so only played sporadically for Fall season, it's healed now, so time to get back into shape.  We had a nice run together!

okay, so it looks as if I haven't done anything for a while, which is true as far as running, but I needed the time off to heal my shin splint.  So, for the past ten days, I have been doing different things such as kickboxing and yoga.  Last night I finally got my treadmill moved into the tv room, so I jumped on it for a mile, and I didn't have any shin pain!!!! So today's run was not very long but it felt good, and my leg still is fine!! I am very happy! I am also happy I can watch tv and run during the winter so I am not so bored while running!!!

Wahoo! Cool about the shin and moving the treadmill. Take it easy so you don't get hurt again. Also nice job on the kickboxing and yoga. Cross training is nice sometimes.

Okay, so I haven't written on here forever!, but I really didn't fall off the wagon.  Since my leg has been feeling 100% better, I have been running 2.5 to 3.1 miles every other day, pain free! I think I pushed myself too hard and never let my leg fully recover.  Lesson learned! So, although I did take a few days off here and there, if I didn't run on my "running" day, then I did either a core workout or a kickboxing (On Demand--- the only good thing about Comcast!) I will try to be better about blogging my runs!

Glad to have you back Peg and glad your leg is feeling better. I was thinking about your running before, and your long runs were probably a bit long. Most recommendations I've seen is to have your long run be 30% of your total weekly distance. So, if you ran 9 miles during the week, run 4 miles on the weekend. Sometimes I fudge that and run up to 50% of my total distance on the weekend but not often. If you do run longer, maybe only do it once in a while. Also, only up your mileage by 10% each week, then step back every 3-4 weeks and do less.

Nice job Peg. These short runs are great and will get you where you want to be. Most of my runs the first year were 2-3 miles and it's amazing how fast that adds up. Add in hills and your improvement will increase rapidly. And other big words.

nice TM run again, I ran it in under 30 min, which for me is really good.  This preset goes from 4.8 mph to 7.0, with inclines ranging from .5 to12.

it seems like 5k's are my thing lately.  I know I said I was going to start at 2, and gradually increase, but when I get to around 2, I am not ready to quit.  My leg is still feeling fine, so I know I am not doing too much, today's preset went from 5.7 mph to 7.0, with inclines from 1.5 to 12.  The 12 @ 7mph really kicks my butt, and I have to hold on so I don't fall off!!!

Wow! That's an intense workout. As for 3.1 vs 2.0 miles, I think it's negligible. If you did an extra mile per day you'd run 4-6 miles more per week, which shouldn't cause shin splints or any other problems. Going from 2 to 4 or 5 miles is a much bigger jump that you'll want to gradually work up to.

Anytime! Actually it was kind of nice to call Mom & Dad then Chris during the swimming finals. It would be a good time to catch up! Or ketchup. I don't know when I'll be doing a Saturday long run again - hopefully sooner rather than later. But you can still call! It's a good way to keep our speed down - having to talk. If gasping to talk, slow down. Or stop talking. Or hang up. Or call 911.

I had to take advantage of the beautiful weather today, so i actually ran outside!!!  Short, but sweet! It was pretty windy, but probably about 60 degrees! It felt soooooo good to be outside,  I wish I didn't hate the cold so much...(and I must say tm running is so much easier!)

I find it easier to go faster outside. I think treadmills are so much more bouncy, you don't get as much pushback on your steps, so you have to try much harder to hit the same speeds inside. I'm glad you got to enjoy some sunshine.

ok, so I actually ran today, I found these skeletoes for $20, so I thought I would try them out, I ran really good today, felt a little pulling in my shins, but I will see how it feels tomorrow. It was nice to feel exactly how my feet are hitting the ground, and I am able to land evenly, though I feel like I land too hard. Oh well nice run for me, kinda hot, but I love the warm....

okay russ, I'm back!!!! even if it was only 3 tm mile, better than nothing!!! felt pretty good, I still haven't been to the dr or p.t.,  but decided to start running anyway.  2 miles were at a 10 minute mile pace, the other a bit slower, but I really am not in it for speed.  Sunday I rode 18 miles on my bike on the JRP, so that was a nice bit of exercise as well.  more to come...... and then I finished off my day with a 5 mile bike ride...nice!

I can't believe I am so lazy and took so many days off, went camping for 5 days, and I imagined myself running around the campgrounds, but that was as far as I got.  Today was super hot, should have gone right when I got up, but, at least I did it.  Mostly cause my brother Russ and his family were at my house for the past 4 days, and I was feeling way guilty!! it was kinda hot today, but i decided i better get out there, i ran just over a mile and got to a high school with a track that has partial shade, there i ran 2.5 on the track, then a did stairs for a song (about 4 min), then took off back to work. by then it was even hotter, so i did some walking, when the sun went behind the clouds, i ran, and walked when it came back out! when i got back and saw 10 other bus drivers sitting around eating donuts, it sure made me happy i ran!!

In St. George for a little family reunion, short 3 miler, but even at 6:45 this morning it was 80 degrees....hot!  My dad rode his bike slowly while I ran, but even with walking a few times I managed to run it in 30 min. Not bad for me!!  I love the low altitude in St. G, it makes it sooooo much easier.

If you did 4 it would be 32% of your miles for the week, and I believe that's a pretty good number for your longer runs. In general if you keep them to about 30% of the weekly total it "shouldn't" cause injury.

Way to be! Kam got after me a while back for using "should" in my daily report, and he's right. Running or walking really doesn't matter - getting out the door and getting miles in is what it's about. Jeff Galloway's run/walk method is adopted by 1000s of people and it works for them. You figure out a run/walk ratio, like run 3 minutes, walk 30 seconds, run 4 minutes, walk 1 minute, etc. I've tried it a couple times and it works. You might want to look into it. There's no "rule of running" that says you must run the entire time or you're a failure. If you plan when you're going to walk vs. having to walk because you don't feel like you can run, it's an entirely different mental matter. You feel powerful and in charge. Try it sometime! You can download a Galloway run/walk app to beep at you for your certain intervals that you choose.

bought a new pair of shoes, I think they are low end, but they are still a stability shoe, I think at least on the TM they will be sufficient.  Seeing as how it was already 73 degrees when I woke up at 5 am, I knew 9am would be way too hot for an outside run, so I did a sprint preset today.  New shoes felt good, I would like to try them outside on Thursday if it's not too hot!
