Hi Peg! Welcome to the blog my awesome older sister. You'll love it. You should add a picture from the 10K last year. Also, when you post miles let us know - treadmill or streets? How were you feeling before/during/after your run? It's fun to hear all that stuff. If you edit your blog and add "Russ" in the favorite blogs part it's a shortcut to see me. You can also add "Kam" and see what Kam Fillmore is up to. Happy running.

Today was a treadmill run because it's snowing outside!! I felt okay, but as usual I get tired around 1.5-2 miles, but then after that, I feel like it's easier to keep going.  I am doing a fundraiser 5K on Saturday and I am looking forward to that.

Fun fundraiser for the nieces!!  My body felt good for the run, but it was sooooo cold outside, it really hurt to breathe.  My time was 35:17, which is slow, but at least I came in under 36, so that's good.  I just signed up today for the American Lung Assoc. 10K on June 4th and am excited to do another 10K.

I had the exact same thing happen to me a couple months ago! It's shin splints. Weird, huh? You've either increased your mileage too fast or you've started running faster than normal or both. I backed off running faster than normal and it eventually went away.

From peg on Fri, May 06, 2011 at 18:23:06 from 98.202.156.12

I wondered if that was it, but when I have had shin splints before, they were in a different spot. I think it's the speed. I guess I am meant to go slow!!

From Russ on Fri, May 06, 2011 at 18:25:53 from 74.114.3.253

I think the shin splints are just telling you to get faster gradually. Mine started after I got my GPS watch and I knew how fast I was going all the time so I sped up. Now I backed off and run moderately most of the time. Keep your speed workout once a week and you'll get faster bit by bit and the shin splints shouldn't bother you. When I had them the bone on the inside of my leg hurt like crazy to the touch - same for you?

From peg on Sat, May 07, 2011 at 12:16:48 from 98.202.156.12

Yes, it does hurt to touch, but not too bad. I was going to try my long run (7.5-8) tomorrow, but do you think I should wait?

From Kam on Sat, May 07, 2011 at 22:31:22 from 174.23.120.174

Either way, on waiting. If you are shin splinting, you do need to slow down. You should be careful about increasing mileage, only add 10% per week. You should not try to increase both mileage and speed at the same time. It's amazing, all the connective tissues, ligaments and tendons you discover when you go too hard, too soon. These soft tissues take 8-12 weeks to remodel, so be patient while your body takes steps to accommodate the beating you are dishing out--otherwise an injury is lurking.

From peg on Sun, May 08, 2011 at 13:49:26 from 98.202.156.12

Thanks for the info, Russ & Kam, I am going to wait until next weekend to try a long run.

3 is about right for the day after doing 4. Good! I hadn't seen you update since Friday so was worried you'd stopped running. Amazing how a little break gets your body healed up. Have you looked for a 10K training plan? I think it would help you, even if you didn't follow it 100%. Go to http://www.halhigdon.com/ and find a training plan that suits you. It helps to have a plan for weekly mileage then break it down day by day, including rest days. I started off running only 4 days a week, resting on Monday, Friday, and Sunday.

Nice going Peg. My shins were the same - never got so bad that it took forever to recover. When I took it easy they'd stop screaming. Sounds like it might be the same for you, hopefully. Have a nice run tomorrow! You'll probably want to bring along something for some energy - a handful of gummy bears, jelly beans, something. Just some calories about 1/2 way through will give you a boost to get home.

No, wind really sucks to run in. Literally. I've got a few different routes that I use when windy, depending on the direction it's blowing. It's amazing how much a row of houses or trees can block the wind for you, and it depends what side of the road you're on for different winds. Nice run!

Way to listen to your body! Like I said last week, I was beat for a few days after my 5K. The racing takes a lot out of you - it's the same distance as some jogs, but the extra exertion beats you up. Kam mentioned it tears muscle fibers? He's smart so I'll believe him. Your recovery sounds perfect.

Nice! At least once a week run fast just because. It does help. Sometimes I'll say before a run that I'm going to have 4 intervals of running fast and I'll go from hydrant to stop sign or whatever landmark I pick and walk when I get there, then jog a bit, then when recovered run fast again. It feels great.

Was it a steady fast run of 1.7 miles or did it speed up then slow down? That's my understanding of fartlek. Run fast as long as you feel like it then slow down then run fast again. A preset one would be similar?

From peg on Mon, Jun 20, 2011 at 12:33:22 from 98.202.156.12

It sped up and slowed down. Every 1 - 2 minutes it changed speed, so it kept you at 4.9, then went up to 7.0, back to 4.9

From Russ on Mon, Jun 20, 2011 at 13:07:39 from 74.114.3.253

From Kam on Wed, Jun 22, 2011 at 00:33:29 from 174.23.214.47

Um, I think a fartlek is the same whether on the track or treadmill. Never mind. I was going to make a poo joke, but then the urge strangely went away.

From Russ on Wed, Jun 22, 2011 at 11:26:39 from 74.114.3.253

There's a difference in fartlek if the treadmill is at home or at the gym. I never fartlek when I'm at the gym and there are strangers around me. I did that once on accident. Very embarrassing.

Camping at Rockport for the weekend, so my son Tanner wanted to go run with me.  He is an awesome runner, he ran up the big hills, no stopping, until at about 1.5 mi., he had an asthma attack.  We didn't have his inhaler with us, usually he doesn't need it, so we walked most of the way back to the trailer.  It was nice to spend that time with him, though

Still at Rockport, so today I got up early and ran on the road to the entrance.  There are three really big hills, so I had to walk up the last half, oh well, the view was absolutely incredible.  I saw a deer, and some chipmunks, and thankfully only smelled the skunk!!  It was a beautiful morning!

Nice paid 6 mile run today!! Since Amber is finally done with driver's ed, I don't have to go pick her up from school, so now I can run during the 3 hours I have to stay at work. (they don't let us drive our bus home during summer school for Hartvigsen) Anyway, ran through SSL, on a nice cloudy morning, and you really can't beat getting paid to exercise!!

In St. George visiting my parents, so I got up early to run before it was too hot.  Even at 6 am it was hot and humid this morning.  So I ran from their house down to the river and followed it around the loop and back.  I've been a slacker lately, so this run felt like it was a million miles.

The heat makes your legs feel like lead also, so it's not just being a slacker. 13 miles last week isn't slacking, though. You're just missing your shorter runs so the longer runs seem longer.

Hey Peg, a 1:30 improvement is something to brag about, especially in a 10k. Nice job by your soccer stud. We had a soccer guy join a Ragnar team three years ago. He showed up in Logan with his new running shoes still in the box. He proceeded to run all his legs around a 6:30 - 7:00 minute pace, blowing all of us away. Those guys must run a lot.

Glad to see you're back on it! Wondered where you were. The back of my knee hurts every now and then also, but mainly hurts while I'm sitting - it twinges pain and when hurting it's bad when driving. Based on other blogs with similar issues, I think it's my hamstring. I guess it connects from the quads down to the top of the calf muscle, right through the back of the knee. When I feel around behind the knee I can feel the string and pinpoint the pain. Is it similar to what you're feeling or something completely different?

From peg on Thu, Oct 20, 2011 at 16:16:49 from 98.202.166.82

thanks allie! i hope so too!

russ, that does sound about right, I know you told me about that in st.george, so I have been watching to see if that was the prob. it gets really stiff when I am driving, and unfortunately i drive about 7+ hours every day, my bus doesn't have a lot of leg room, but i have found a spot that i can squish my foot into to stretch it out and i think that has helped.

Total Distance

Ran outside today, my knee is feeling much better now. I did walk uphill a few times, it seems to bother me more uphill, so I think Russ is right and it is a hamstring issue. Anyway nice run today.

So after taking a very long 7 day break from running, I finally was able to go today.  It was pretty cold out, and snow very lightly on and off, but I am glad I went.  I  am not sure if I have a pulled muscle or it's shin splints, but I was limping around last week, and when I tried to run on Tues, I had to turn around after 1/2 mile.  I decided then I had better take some more time off to heal.  I did take ibuprofen before today's run, just to make sure it wouldn't hurt too bad. Yea! It was really hard for me not to run, because I feel like I am finally committed to something, I have ran consistently since March 1, and hopefully I can keep on going!!

Great job Peg! Glad you were able to get out. From other blogs I've seen, it looks like new shoes are a fairly regular culprit of shin splint-type injuries. I think I had them the last time I got new shoes. It is hopefully just your body adjusting to the new shoe type and the way your body moves wearing them. Try popping ibuprofen every day and even considering icing them. Have you ever tried soaking the legs in a 5 gallon bucket of ice water? It hurts like the Dickens the first time you do it, but it reduces swelling and pain like no other. After 2 minutes of pure hell you'll be able to do it for 15 minutes, but no more than that or frostbite can happen. Good luck!

From allie on Thu, Dec 08, 2011 at 21:34:41 from 24.10.191.18

nice job, peg. you were smart to take the time off when you did. the shins are fragile and it's better to take a bit of time off now than a lot of time off later.

in addition to the stellar advice from russ, i would also add in heel/toe walking. walk on your toes for 2 minutes, then on your heels. repeat a few times. i have a lot of shin/calf problems and doing this on a regular basis keeps everything loose and feeling healthy. good luck.

From peg on Fri, Dec 09, 2011 at 00:33:33 from 208.54.4.148

Thanks for the advice. I don't think it's the new shoes cause it has been hurting for quite a while, but I will try icing, and the exercises. Thanks you two!
